Former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Chairman, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has picked up the People's Democratic Party's (PDP) gubernatorial candidate form and is now poised to run in its primaries ahead of the October poll. Last week, Mallam Ribadu defected from the opposition All
Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the PDP and automatically became the frontrunner for governorship in his native Adamawa State. Following the recent impeachment of Adamawa governor Murtala Nyako, a bye-election is due to hold on October 11 and with Mallam Ribadu now in the PDP, he is the clear front runner.
Yesterday, one of Mallam Ribadu's political associates Alhaji Ahmidu Mahmoud picked up the form on his behalf after paying the N11m (£40,000) fee required. Alhaji Mahmoud confirmed that Mallam Ribadu has began the process of getting waiver which will enable him participate in the primary elections.
He said, “The waiver clause in the party’s constitution was not inserted because of him but he is expected to enjoy the waiver. We have applied for the waiver and we expect that he would get it.” He added that Mallam Ribadu is not relying on the support of President Goodluck Jonathan as has been reported, to win the Adamawa state gubernatorial primary elections.
Other senior PDP figures from Adamawa State interested in the governorship race include former military administrator of Lagos State, General Buba Marwa; former senator representing Adamawa Central, Abubakar Girei; a former political adviser to the president, Ahmed Gulak, and a one-time minister, Idi Hong. Others are Dr Umar Ardo, the former executive secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission; Dr Ahmed Modibo
