Naira Depreciates By N7

The naira yesterday could not sustain the gains recorded on Wednesday, as it depreciated against the US dollar in the parallel market, closing at N222 to a dollar.  This represents a depreciation of N7 from Wednesday when a dollar exchanged for N215 in Lagos and Kano, and N220 to a dollar in Abuja. Also, the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN yesterday directed that banks should pay for their dollar purchases 48 hours in advance. Sources from the Bureaux De Changes (BDCS) said that the gains recorded on Wednesday could not be sustained yesterday due to the fact that the dollar sold to them by the CBN was bought  by people that felt that the naira  would  fall as the CBN may not be able to sustain the sale of more dollar to the parallel market.

DPR Shuts 100 Fuel Stations In Oyo, Osun

The Ibadan field office of the Department of Petroleum Resources, which controls Oyo and Osun states, has sealed about 100 petrol filling stations across the two states in a weeklong exercise aimed at penalising marketers who sell petrol above the official pump price of N87 per litre. Apart from selling above the regulated price, the management of the affected filling stations were also accused of diversion of petroleum products, tampering with meters and other sharp practices.

A man of God and the General Overseer of a Zimbabwean church, Pastor Madaristo Ranch, has been arrested after he beheaded his pregnant wife, Pamela Muzondi, with a kitchen knife and hiding the corpse in a dish in the bedroom. After that, he calmly went to his church, Living Word Ministries, and conducted the service before fleeing towards the Mozambican border and was arrested before he could skip into the neighbouring country.The body of Muzondi was discovered by relatives five days after her husband murdered her, suspecting ritualistic tendencies because her eyes and heart were missing while her stomach was also cut open and the fetus removed. A relative told a UK based private newspaper: "She was killed on Sunday and we only discovered her on Friday morning."

Lagos Releases 11bn For Pension Payment

The Lagos State Government has released N11bn to offset pension liabilities in arrears in the state since 2010. The government said the move was to bring succour to all retirees in the Lagos State Public Service. The Head of Service, Mrs. Folashade Jaji, on Wednesday in Alausa, Ikeja, said the state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, had directed that the sum should be used to pay the pension liabilities of the Lagos State Government mainstream retirees and the retirees in local governments areas and parastatal organisations.

Buhari Fires Eight NNPC Group Executive Directors

Twenty-four hours after the Federal Government replaced the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, it announced the sacking of all the eight executive directors of the corporation. Woman Murders Her Father, Daughter, Stuffs Them In Boxes

Cheyanne Jessie killed her father, Mark Weekly, 50, and her daughter Meredith, 6, then waited more than a week before reporting them missing, detectives say. The pair's remains were found in plastic boxes on a neighbor's property in Lakeland, Florida, late Saturday night, some 200 yards from Weekly's home. Investigators claim she killed Meredith because she was getting in the way of her relationship with a new boyfriend. It is not clear why she would have killed her father as well.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said the bodies were found after officers smelled the stench of death. Both were said to have stab wounds and gunshot wounds.Officials said the two were last seen on July 18, though Jessie did not report them missing until this Saturday.

Two new cases of Ebola have surfaced in Sierra Leone’s Tonkolili district after a man died last week in the area where the deadly virus had not been seen for months, according to an official. The two new cases are relatives of a man who contracted the virus in mid-July, the National Ebola Response Centre’s OB Sisay said on Sunday. “We now know where the virus is and we are tracking its movement, by surrounding, containing and eradicating its last remaining chain of transmission,” Sisay said. Authorities moved quickly to contain the spread, but more cases are feared, he said.

Ghana Man Murders Pregnant Nigerian Woman

A pregnant Nigerian woman has been slaughtered by a Ghana man who pretended to be helping her get to a hospital when she went into labour. The gory incident reportedly happened on Monday, July 13, 2015, in Yeji, Brong Ahafo Region. According to the Sun Newspaper, the heavily pregnant mother of four identified as Amina Usman, was murdered by her neighbour identified as Abdul, who had offered to give her assistance shortly after she entered labour and walking to the bus top to get a vehicle but instead of taking her to the hospital, Abdul drove her into a bush and proceeded to slaughter her with a cutlass, cutting open her womb and removing the baby.
