For a lot of kids who
grow up in single parent households, they are unaware of the sacrifices that
their mothers have to make while overcompensating for the lack of a father
figure in the home. At times, being
unaware causes a lack of compassion and understanding for what our mothers have
to go through, and it even causes animosity in some kids. It’s not until the child becomes an adult, or
have kids of their own that they truly understand that mom was “superwoman.”
This seems to be the case for Eminem. Throughout his career,
he has dragged his mom through the mud, slandered her in songs, and has even
been sued by his mother for defamation. It’s unclear when his feelings towards
her may have changed, but he now has a song out called “Headlights” where he
asks for her forgiveness in hopes that they can mend their relationship. He
also reveals that he is embarrassed when he hears those old songs on the radio.
‘Cause to this day we
remain estranged and I hate it though
‘Cause you ain’t even
get to witness your grand babies grow
But I’m sorry, Mama,
for “Cleaning Out My Closet,” at the time I was angry
Rightfully maybe so,
never meant that far to take it though,
‘Cause now I know it’s
not your fault, and I’m not making jokes
That song I no longer
play at shows and I cringe every time it’s on the radio
And I’m way too old to
cry, the sh-t is painful though
But, Ma, I forgive
you, so does Nathan, yo
All you did, all you
said, you did your best to raise us both
This song and video is probably too heavy for a post on
Mother’s Day, but there is a powerful message that is being sent. It’s a reminder that sometimes we don’t
realize what we have until it’s gone. It’s best to let go of grudges and
cherish those who are in our lives while they are still here. Hopefully, Em and
his mom will make amends before it’s too late.
