Based on results announced from 55% of polling units across Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is leading Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by
more than 80,000 votes. Figures obtained as at 9.30 p.m. (Nigerian time) revealed that Mr. Ambode had received 325,026 votes as opposed to 240, 467 votes for Mr. Agbaje.
The APC and PDP are seen as the main rivals in the race for the Lagos State governorship. Both parties campaigned heavily over the last week in the state that was carried by the APC’s presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.
Lagos State is Nigeria’s most populous city and has historically been the site of intense opposition politics.
The governorship race drew national and international attention a week ago following threatening comments by Oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos warning some representatives of Igbo communities that they must support Mr. Ambode or face drowning in the lagoon. Mr. Akiolu’s incendiary comments were widely condemned on the social media as well as by numerous political groups.
