Armed Gunmen Now Pose As Evangelists To Rob Tenants In Edo

As the Yuletide season fast approaches, desperate armed robbers in Benin City, the Edo State capital, now disguise as evangelists to gain access to private residences, in the guise of preaching the gospel. According to The Nation, the unlucky armed men, numbering three, were reportedly caught at Evoutubu, a suburban settlement in the city when after gaining access to a block of four flats at about 9am yesterday, they brought out a cut-to-size pump action gun which they used to dispossess many women of their belongings.

The robbers were, however, said to have been apprehended when one of the members insisted on raping one of the female occupants, thereby giving an opportunity to one of the occupants to escape and subsequently raise an alarm, which attracted neighbours who pursued and caught them.

Men of the Evoutubu Police division who were on patrol in the area, however, prevented the angry crowd from setting the criminals on fire after they were beaten to pulp.

The Edo State Police Public Relation Officer, DSP Noble Uwoh, who confirmed the incident, urged the residents to be wary of persons they allow into their homes in whatever guise. He called on the people of the state to be vigilant and report suspicous characters to the police.
