Expert Warns Nigeria Against Food Scarcity

The Vice-Chairman, South-West Zone of the Agriculture and Allied Employees’ Union of Nigeria, Blessing Oladele, has asked the Federal Government to heed the warning given by Nigeria Meteorological Agency that the country may experience food scarcity due to low rainfall in 2015. Speaking in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday, Oladele said the low rainfall experienced in the South-West and North, known to be agriculture zones, called for serious concern. He said his union would soon map out strategies on how to partner Governors in the South-West to diversify the economy and improve farming, especially the stomach infrastructure policy of Governor Ayodele Fayose.

NPA Made N162bn, Remitted N2bn – Oshiomhole

The Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, on Tuesday said that the Nigerian Ports Authority only remitted N2bn out of a total sum of N162bn it generated in a year. He said that those who presided over the affairs of the NPA spent N160bn out of the total amount the agency generated.
Oshiomhole, who said this at the National Delegates’ Conference of the National Union of Roads Transport Workers in Abuja , said that the figures he quoted were from an official report.

Asari Dokubo, Fasheun Adams Threaten To Sue NNPC Over Unpaid Due

Former Niger Delta militant leader, Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, factional leaders of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), Dr. Frederick Fasehun and Otunba Gani Adams, as well as other beneficiaries of the controversial Pipeline Security and Surveillance contracts, have called on Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to pay  their outstanding fees by the end of the month, or face legal action. In an open letter addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari, they claimed that they had a three-month contract with the NNPC, from March 15 to  June 15, which they delivered on but are yet to be paid.

Naira Rises To 217 Against Dollar

The naira appreciated against the United States dollar at the parallel market on Monday to 217, from 221 recorded on Friday. The naira rose on the back of weak demand for the dollar at the foreign exchange markets. Forex traders linked this to an improved dollar liquidity occasioned by the sustained sales of the greenback by the Central Bank of Nigeria. Reacting to the rising fortune of the local currency, the Acting President, Association of Bureau De Change Operators, Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, said, “The market has started feeling the effect of the dollar sales by the central bank in the last two weeks and tight measures introduced to prevent cross boarder currency trafficking.”

Buhari To Recover Govt Houses From Jonathan’s Men

President Muhammadu Buhari has concluded plans to recover all government property still in possession of government officials who served under former President Goodluck Jonathan. The Federal Government’s assets including vehicles, buildings, generator sets and others were said to still be in the possession of the former government officials weeks after they had left office. Irked by the development, Buhari was said to have set up a committee made up of civil servants and security agencies to identify and recover the unreturned public assets from the former political appointees.
The development is in continuation of ongoing efforts of the President to reclaim Nigeria’s stolen resources. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, confirmed the development to journalists on Sunday.

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has denied a rumour that the party is behind the recent call for the probe of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s immediate predecessor, Babatunde Fashola (SAN). But it called on Ambode to probe his predecessor. The PDP also denied having any hand in the alleged acrimony in the ruling All Progressives Congress in Lagos. The PDP however counselled the APC leaders to face the allegations instead of blackmailing or dragging the opposition party into its internal strife.

Zenith Bank Posts N72bn Half-Year Gross Profits

Zenith Bank Plc has announced a profit before tax of N72 billion for the half year period ending June 30, 2015, representing 24 per cent increase over N58 billion posted in the same period in 2014.
The bank’s audited half-year financial statement released on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, NSE, showed that its profit after tax rose to N53 billion from N47 billion reported in the same period in 2014. Also, the gross earnings increased by 24 per cent from N184.4 billion in June 2014 to N229.08 billion in the review period, while its net interest income rose by 14 per cent to N112.6 billion from N98.6 billion in 2004.

My $1bn China-Exim Bank Story, By Okonjo-Iweala

The immediate past Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has denied that the China-EximBank loan for the rehabilitation of the Lagos-Kano rail line was diverted as alleged by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Alhaji Muhanned Bashar. Alhaji Bashar had told President Muhammadu Buhari during the ministry’s briefing session, last week, that only $400 million of the $ 1 billion China-EximBank loan meant for the project was spent, creating the impression that over $600 million was diverted by the last administration.

Boko Haram Leader Abubakar Shekau Says He is 'Still In Charge'

The leader of Nigeria's Boko Haram denied he had been killed or ousted as chief of the extremist group in an audio recording released on Sunday attributed to him by security experts. In the eight-minute Hausa-language message, Abubakar Shekau denied claims by Chadian leader Idriss Deby that he had been replaced and calls the president a "hypocrite" and a "tyrant". "It is indeed all over the global media of infidels that I am dead or that I am sick and incapacitated and have lost influence in the affairs of religion," he says in the recording released on social media."It should be understood that this is false. This is indeed a lie. If it were true, my voice wouldn't have been heard, now that I am speaking."
Mr Deby declared on August 12 that efforts to combat neighbouring Nigeria's Boko Haram jihadists had succeeded in "decapitating" the group and would be wrapped up "by the end of the year".
Mr Deby told reporters in the capital N'Djamena Boko Haram was no longer led by the fearsome Shekau and that his successor, whom he named as Mahamat Daoud, was open to talks.
"Gratitude be to Allah and with his help, I have not disappeared. I am still alive and I am not dead. And I will not die until my time appointed by Allah is up," Shekau says in the message.
The SITE Intelligence Group verified the authenticity of the message, and an AFP correspondent with extensive experience of reporting Boko Haram said it exactly resembled Shekau's voice in previous recordings

The Trigana Air Service plane that went missing Sunday has been found, Indonesia's director general of air transportation, Suprasetyo, said during a news conference. FG Monitors Nigerians’ Facebook, Twitter Accounts

The Federal Government has been monitoring the social media accounts of Nigerians who are suspected of having links with various terrorist groups, including Boko Haram and the Islamic State of Syria and Iraq, findings have shown. It was learnt that through covert operations, which have been going on for a while, security agencies hack into the Facebook and Twitter accounts of those they are monitoring. The move, it was learnt, was meant to frustrate terrorist attacks on the country.
