Fuel Scarcity: 36 Ships With Petrol, Kerosene & Food Items Expected In Lagos

36 ships laden with petroleum products, food items and other commodities are expected to arrive at the Lagos ports from June 5 to June 21. The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) made the disclosure on Friday in Lagos in its daily publication, “Shipping Position’’. The publication noted that 17 of the expected ships will sail in with containers, and the remaining 19 ships which contained petrol, kerosene, diesel, general cargo, fresh fish, bulk fertilizer, steel products and buckwheat.

Tension In Lagos Community As Thugs Slaughter Five After Naming Ceremony

Five people have been confirmed killed in the Ajah area of  Lagos as some hoodlums, suspected to be working for a political party sent them to their early graves. It was gathered that the victims were coming from a naming ceremony when the men waylaid, and opened fire on their bus. The killer gang was also said to have entered the vehicle and used cutlasses and knives to slit the throats of some of the occupants. Man Arraigned In Lagos As Pregnant 15-Year Old Girlfriend Dies After Abortion

20-year old man, Sodiq Sulaimon, was yesterday appeared before an Ikeja High Court for allegedly procuring abortion for his 15-year old lover, who died in the process. The defendant is facing a one-count charge of manslaughter brought against him by Lagos State Government, for which he pleaded not guilty.

“Sodiq Sulaimon, on or before December 11, 2012, about 4p.m., at 7 Oriokuta Street, Imota, Ikorodu Lagos, in the Ikeja Judicial Division, did unlawfully killed girl (names withheld) by procuring abortion for her,” the charge stated.

Death Toll Hist 90 As Ghana President Announces 3 Days National Mourning

Yesterday, Ghanaian President, John Dramani Mahama officially announced a 3-day national mourning after fire broke out at a filling station in the Kwame Nkrumah Circle area of Accra late on Wednesday night killing at least 90 people in heavily flooded area. The President described the loss of life as “catastrophic and almost unprecedented”, as he toured the scene of the disaster on Thursday morning.

"Rescue operations will continue until the weekend, Sunday. On Monday, we will observe three days of national mourning for the victims of the fire disaster and flooding. A lot of people have lost their lives and I am lost for words."

36-year old Lagos bricklayer and choirmaster, Adewale Babalola, who allegedly had unlawful carnal knowledge of a 16-year old chorister in his church, was on Thursday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court. The accused, who lives at Aguda in Surulere area of Lagos, is facing a charge of unlawful sexual intercourse. Over 78 persons seeking refuge from the flood at Goil gas station lost their lives after it went up in flames in Accra, Ghana yesterday. A spokesman for the Ghana fire service, Billy Anaglate, said the emergency services had recovered dozens of bodies from the scene at a Goil filling station on the busy Kwame Nkrumah Circle north of the city centre.

"We are still trying to salvage the site of the accident before we can come out with an accurate figure. Flooding caused the diesel and petrol to flow away from the gas station, and fire from a nearby house led to the explosion, killing  all the people taking refuge there."

Nigerian Senate Approves Life Sentence For Rape & 10 Years For Incest

According to the Sexual Offences Bill sponsored by Senator Chris Anyanwu, which was passed into law yesterday by the Nigerian Senate, anybody found guilty of rape, child sex tourism or deliberate passage of HIV/AIDS to innocent citizens, and other sexual offences, will face life imprisonment. The bill, among others, prescribes life imprisonment for gang rape, 10 years for incest, another 10 years imprisonment for child pornography or more and a fine of N2 million as well as 14 years jail term for sexual offences.
