Vatican Librarian Official Arrested In Possession Of Cocaine

A car bearing Vatican diplomatic plates was stopped in France with 4kg of cocaine and 200g of cannabis on board, The Guardian reports. The car belongs to the 91-year-old Argentinian cardinal Jorge Mejia, emeritus librarian at the Holy See, who retired in 2003 and who is bedridden after a heart attack. Pope Francis, a fellow Argentinian, visited Mejia in hospital in Rome two days after being elected.

According to a report on Premium Times, a student of National Open University of Nigeria, Abdulmalik Sa’idu, has been languishing in a police cell for over 20 days on the orders of the Governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shema, for posting details of an alleged fertiliser scam in the state on his Facebook timeline. Abdulmalik was first invited to Katsina government house on August 28 by a phone caller who claimed he had a message for him. But when he arrived at the governor’s office, he was promptly arrested, handcuffed and taken to Batagarawa Police Station just outside the state capital, Katsina, and detained on the orders of Mr. Shema’s aide-de-camp, Shehu Koko, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP.

Federal Government Not Doing Enough To Contain Boko Haram – Catholic Bishops

The Catholic Bishop Conference of Nigeria has said the Federal Government is not doing enough to contain the activities of the extremist Boko Haram sect in the North East zone. The bishops therefore challenged the administration to step up its strategies in the region to safeguard the lives of the people. In a communiqué issued after its meeting on Thursday in Warri, Delta State, the Conference lamented the increasing carnage in the region and urged the government to act decisively. The document, sent to Premium Times on Friday, was signed by its President, Ignatius Kaigama, and Secretary, William Avenya.

Praise God! August Alsina has finally sent an update! Over the weekend, the singer was performing at a show in New York City when he grew weak, collapsed and fell off stage. A Muslim scholar has opened the doors to what is believed to be the world’s only gay-friendly mosque in Cape Town, South Africa. According to a BBC report, Dr. Taj Hargey, a professor at Oxford University’s Muslim Educational Centre has completed the ‘Open Mosque’ which welcomes not only gay Muslims, but also invites women to pray alongside men, and even to lead prayers.
The opening of the mosque has been condemned by many in Cape Town’s Muslim community with one Muslim group unsuccessfully attempting to block the opening of the mosque.

One Reported Dead As Church Building Collapses In Edo

There was anger among residents of Uzama Street, Uzebu quarters in Egor local government area of Edo State, following the collapse of a one-storey building belonging to Christ Chosen Church of God. The residents were not happy that the church authorities refused to call for rescue operations hours after the building collapsed. The residents blamed the church for using individuals to destroy the church instead of hiring a bulldozer.

A shocking Skype suicide where a young man hanged himself while online spectators urged him on is being investigated by police in Russia. Victim Sergey Kirilov, 26, from Moscow, had announced his own death on a social networking site and asked anyone who wanted to see it to link to him on Skype. Astonished police say instead of trying to stop him, many urged him on, saying a 'real man' would have killed himself more quickly. Six Iranians arrested for appearing in a video dancing to Pharrell Williams' song 'Happy' have been sentenced to up to one year in prison and 91 lashes, their lawyer says. The sentences were suspended for three years, meaning they will not go to prison unless they reoffend, he adds. The video shows three men and three unveiled women dancing on the streets and rooftops of Tehran and in six months, it has been viewed by over one million people on YouTube.

South African Court Approves Seizure Of Nigeria’s $9.3Million

South Africa has seized the $9.3 million Nigerian cash flown abroad a private jet into its capital, Johannesburg, from Abuja early this month.Two Nigerians and an Israeli were travelling with the plane’s crew at the time the cash, which was not declared, was found on the plane. South African security and Nigeria have launched an investigation into what transpired. Punch reports that the Plateau State police authorities have arrested a man named Maimako Shephang for allegedly selling his wife to ritualists for N800,000. Shephang lured his wife, Agnes, into the bush and sold her to “two masked men” for ritual purposes. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officials arrested a South African football coach for drug trafficking at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos. The 38-year-old coach named Steven Darlugar, was arrested during the passenger screening process while he was preparing to board an Arik Air flight to South Africa, Punch reports. Methamphetamine weighing 1.54 kilogrammes was found hidden in the compartment of one of his suitcases.

Boko Haram: 15 Soldiers Court-Martialled & Get 4-Years Imprisonment

No fewer than 15 soldiers were court-martialed and each sentenced to four years’ jail term following their refusal to report to the war front in the northern parts of Adamawa State. This is barely two days after the Nigerian Army sentenced 12 of its personnel to death by firing squad after they staged a mutiny and attacked the GOC, 3 Division in Maiduguri, Borno State.
