President Goodluck Jonathan said yesterday that the fight against Boko Haram terrorists has taken so long because Nigerians were not yet fully united to fight the menace. Speaking at an Interdenominational Church service to mark the country’s 54th Independence celebration, President Jonathan said when Nigerians are fully united, there is no problem that they cannot overcome. Citing the case of Ebola Virus Disease which Nigeria has effectively contained, President Jonathan said despite political differences, Nigerians were able to unite across political, ethnic and religious divide to fight it.

Fierce fighting has been reported on the outskirts of Baghdad where ISIS militants are attempting to seize control of the Iraqi capital despite ongoing Western airstrikes against the terror group. The fighting is taking place just one mile to the west of the city, with government forces desperately trying to hold off the militants, who allegedly killed up to 1,000 soldiers during clashes yesterday.

Influential Kano Emirate Member, Galadiman Kano Dies At 79

He is said to be one of the most powerful members of the Kano emirate council, the Galadiman Kano, Tijjani Hashim, is dead. He was 79. An emirate source confirmed to Premium Times that the Galadima died in the early hours of today (Monday) in Abuja. The source, who declined to be named because the emirate council is yet to make an official pronouncement on the development, said arrangements were already in progress to fly Mr. Hashim’s remains from Abuja for burial at about 2 p.m. in Kano.

80 Females Employed By Lagos Government As LAGBUS Drivers

Lagos State Government yesterday said it had employed additional 80 women as mass transit drivers, with Lagos Bus Asset Management Company, LAGBUS, as part of its effort to empower women in the state. This came as it commenced training of 998 drivers of LAGBUS on accident prevention skills. Managing Director, LAGBUS, Mr. Babatunde Disu, who disclosed this, at the training for the fourth batch of LAGBUS captains at the Public Service Public Service Staff  Development Centre.

Military Troops Capture Monstrous Armored Tank From Boko Haram Insurgents

Nigerian military intelligence officials say they were surprised at the sophisticated weapons being used by Boko Haram insurgents. 300 Boko Haram Terrorists Surrender In Cameroon, Plead For Asylum

No fewer than 300 Boko Haram fighters have surrendered in Nigeria’s neighbouring country Cameroon in the past three weeks, Cameroon’s defence ministry has said. According to the country’s military spokesman Lt. Col. Didier Badjeck, the Islamist militants gave up their arms and asked for asylum in Cameroon. Badjeck added that the fates of the terrorists are yet to be decided. It would be recalled that fighters from neighboring Cameroon, Niger and Chad have been identified recently fighting alongside Nigeria’s homegrown Boko Haram sect.
