A commercial Nissan car yesterday caught fire near Sheraton Hotel, Abuja at about 3.00pm. Initial reports indicate that the fire may have began with a minor electrical spark, which melted wires under the car's engine hood and quickly developed into a ball of fire which consumed the entire vehicle.
The driver of the burnt Nissan lamented that he had sought the help of onlookers in controlling the blaze, but none heeded his pleas.“The vehicle would have been salvaged, if the people around there have assisted with their fire extinguisher. I watched my car burnt to the aches”.
Coincidentally, a fire-fighter truck which happened to be in the vicinity stopped at the scene of the blaze, but by then the blaze had destroyed the vehicle.
The incident caused major traffic gridlock in the vicinity of the National Mosque and Sheraton Hotel with some motorists forced to undertake alternative routes to reach their destinations.
