Oyenike Laoye-Oturu,
professionally known as Nikki Laoye
is a Nigerian recording artist, singer, songwriter and dancer, renowned for her
eclectic musical expressions and captivating stage performances.
The gospel artiste recently added another feather to her
congested hat. She’s now the Voice of Refugees, in the South West geo-political
zone. She is saddled with the responsibility of taking care of displaced
persons in the region being a naturally caring person.
In this interview with Encomium Weekly, the talented music maker outlined
how she intends to go about her new duty as an ambassador for humanity and much
more…
How does it feel
being unveiled as the Voice of Refugees in Southwest, Nigeria?
I am honoured to have been given this opportunity to serve
and help my brothers and sisters. It’s no fault of theirs that they had to
settle here in Nigeria as wars, unrest and other unavoidable circumstances in
their countries have displaced them. It’s our duty as caring Nigerians to make
them feel at home and provide them with the necessary assistance to get back on
their feet. And I would definitely help to drive this campaign to the best of
my ability.
How were you
contacted?
I was contacted by the South West zonal office of the NCFRMI
(National Commission for Refugees, Migrants & Internally Displaced
Persons), a humanitarian establishment under the Federal Government of Nigeria,
who had been on the lookout for celebrity representatives who have a passion
for humanitarian work.
What do you think
gave you an edge over others?
Aside music, I am also a humanitarian with an NGO founded by
me in 2010 – Nikki Laoye’s Angel 4 Life Foundation that mentors and supports
visually impaired and physically challenged youths. The commission had recently
come across some of my foundation’s activities and reached out to me.
Being Voice of
Refugees, what are the things expected of you?
As a Voice for Refugees, my duties include projecting the
activities of the commission and also help bring to the fore the plight of
refugees and internally displaced persons within the South West Zone.
How long would the
deal last?
For now, it would last for a year and it’s subject to
renewal.
What made you accept
being the Voice of Refugees?
Personally, I am a caring person with a genuine heart for
the well being of others hence the decision to work alongside the NCFRMI
(National Commission for Refugees, Migrants & Internally Displaced
Persons).
Your latest video,
123 was well received by your fans, how does that make you feel?
Of course, I am very happy that people are crazy about the
video as I have received numerous reviews across Africa and Europe. The song
had received the same huge response at its earlier release. A lot of work went
into the production of the video with the scripting and styling by me; the
choreography by Temisan of Alien Nation Dance Group and Stephen of Kaffy’s
Imagneto Dance Team. The video was directed by Frizzle & Bizzle Films and
shot here in Nigeria at the University of Lagos.
What was the song all
about and what inspired it?
I simply wanted to make a happy song…a song that will bring
joy and laughter into the heart of everyone as we all definitely thank God each
day for the gift of love, life and family. The song was produced by my younger
brother and producer, Xblaze Ade Laoye.
How are you enjoying
marital bliss?
I thank God. We are doing great; working, loving and
learning from each other daily.
How would you rate
your career?
Right now, my career has kicked off to a great start once
again after my brief hiatus since 2011, when I lost my No. 1 boyfriend my dad,
Prince Olushola Laoye. Winning The Headies in December 2013; recording the
National Anthem video and the huge trend of my latest singles – 123, Only You
and Your Number are great blessings and I am working harder to do more each
day.
The year is still
young, what else should your fans expect from you?
They should expect more of Nikki Laoye – the urban
contemporary Christian artiste, who is a believing born-again Christian, a
worshipper, a lover, a fighter, a survivor, a motivator, who speaks about her
faith, life’s issues and experiences; love and relationships.
With each song, I would always be a voice of inspiration,
encouragement, love, healing, hope, joy, straight from heaven’s gates to the
hearts of men.
