Surrendered Boko Haram Insurgents Set To Undergo Rehabilitation

The Boko Haram insurgents who had surrendered to the military authorities would be rehabilitated before being reintegrated into the society, the federal government says. Mike Omeri, the Coordinator of the National Information Centre (NIC) and Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) said this at a briefing yesterday in Abuja. He explained that the rehabilitation strategy, as contained in the counter-terrorism document launched by the government, would be strictly followed in handling the surrendered insurgents.

According to Omeri, those who surrendered would be taken through the process of de-radicalisation and rehabilitation, while those who refuse would be fished out to face the full wrath of the law for their actions.

“Those terrorists, who surrendered their arms and embrace peace will undergo the process of de-radicalisation and rehabilitation, so that they will be admitted into society and given the opportunity to continue contributing their own quota to the development of this country. But for those who insist on carrying arms against their country, against their fellow citizens, they will have themselves to blame," he said.

Omeri said Nigeria’s military had devised a winning strategy against the insurgents, thereby urging the general public to be steadfast and supportive of the government in the fight against insurgency.

“I want to urge citizens to be steadfast in their support to our servicemen and women; they are working hard, day and night to ensure that they put terrorism behind us in Nigeria. The armed forces have found the winning strategy and they will not go back on making sure that adequate security is provided for every single Nigerian,” he said.
