No fewer than 450 Boko Haram gunmen were said to have been killed in the encounter as the insurgents were repelled back from both Ngamdu, about 100 kilometres from Maiduguri on the Maiduguri-Damaturu road and Konduga, about 40 kilometres on the Maiduguri-Bama road.

A member of the Civilian JTF, who disclosed this, craving anonymity, said the insurgents were probably heading towards Maiduguri from the two opposite directions.

According to the source, the men of the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army Headquarters in Maiduguri stationed in Konduga and Ngamdu engaged the insurgents in heavy confrontation and killed about 300 in Konduga where they had equally repelled them last week during which over 100 insurgents were killed.

Another Civilian JTF member, Bashir Abbas, also said that the attempts by the Boko Haram gunmen to invade Maiduguri suffered a setback as they were repelled by the military at different parts of the state with the insurgents recording heavy casualties.
According to him, the insurgents were repelled at Ajiri , Mafa and Konduga on Tuesday, stressing that the gunmen were also repelled Wednesday morning on the Maiduguri- Damaturu road at Ngamdu about 100 kilometres away from Maiduguri and 20 kilometres from Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.

Disclosing that the confrontation between the military and the insurgents occurred between 2-5pm at Ajiri, 2-4.30pm at Mafa and 4.30-9pm at Konduga, Abbas said the encounter left hundreds of the insurgents dead, stressing that the military equally seized many ammunition from the insurgents.

Abbas listed the ammunition seized to include five buffalo vehicles mounted with anti- aircraft guns and a Shelcar sophisticated gun.

Though no official confirmation of the encounter was forthcoming when filing this report, Abbas disclosed that with the latest success of the military, residents of Maiduguri can now heave a sigh of relief.
