"Inflation Real Reasons For DStv Tariff Increase" - MultiChoice Nigeria

MultiChoice Nigeria has defended the latest DStv tariff increase in the country, saying the company has taken into account many factors. Such factors, it said, included, “the impact on the subscriber, current inflation, and efficiencies effected within the company that may offset the necessity for a price increase.” The company also said that the increase in DStv tariffs was not only in Nigeria, but also in every country where MultiChoice has its operations.
Multichoice Africa, the parent company of DStv, on March 3, announced a price increase for DStv, which will take effect from April 1, 2015. The price increase will set the DStv premium from N11,650 to N13,980.

The increment is the same across other DStv packages/bouquet, and between 5 and 10% increase, but comes with ShortsTV, Ginx TV and Eurochannel as additional channels.

The Public Relations Manager at MultiChoice Nigeria, Ms. Caroline Oghuma, in a statement she shared with our correspondent, said,
“MultiChoice implements annual subscription price increase in all its operating countries, however, a price increase was not implemented in Nigeria last year.”
“We would like to reassure our subscribers of our best intentions and reaffirm our commitment to Nigeria which is clearly demonstrated through our continuous investments in the country.”
Meanwhile, DStv subscribers in the country have opposed the increase in tariffs. A popular Nollywood actor, who didn’t want her name in print, said,
“This is indeed frustrating, especially when they (DStv) have made most of us buy a DStv explora, which we paid almost N85, 000 to get, plus LNB and installation.”
“Was it that they just wanted to make money from Nigerians by selling exploras, and then afterwards decided to increase the rates without considering popular opinion. If the explora was a product of popular opinion, we don’t see why a sudden increase in tariffs shouldn’t have been based on popular opinion.”
