Multiple award-winning Hollywood actor, Idris Elba has smashed an 88-year-old driving record by travelling at 180.361mph over a measured mile. The movie star blasted across the Pendine stands in Wales in a £175,000 Bentley Continental GT to beat the 1927 record set by Sir Malcolm Campbell. He had to cover a one-mile distance beating an average speed of 174.8mph to break the long-standing record.
Sir Malcom set the record in 1927 in his specially constructed Bluebird car. The daredevil used the Welsh beach as there were no roads or runways at the time which were long, straight and level enough to travel a mile at a record breaking speed. So in a homage to Sir Malcolm's spectacular effort, Elba visited the exact same spot in his modern-day super car.
The record was independently verified by the UK Timing Association.
The attempt formed part of a new TV show the star was filming for Discovery UK called 'No Limits'.
Speaking on his victory he said...
'I'm absolutely elated to have broken the "Flying Mile" at Pendine Sands. It's an honour to have taken on the challenge, and to successfully follow in the footsteps of the illustrious Sir Malcolm Campbell.'
