Leaders of the failed coup in Burundi against 49-year old President Pierre Nkurunziza, have surrendered on Friday,with an AFP reporter who heared of the arrest by telephone reports. The coup leaders’ spokesman, Venon Ndabaneze, was speaking to AFP confirming that they had decided to surrender when loyalist troops arrested him, deputy coup leader, Cyrille Ndayirukiye and another senior figure among the mutineers.
The leader of the coup attempt, former intelligence chief General Godefroid Niyombare, also said via telephone that he was surrendering, adding that troops loyal to the president were approaching him. “We have decided to surrender. I hope they won’t kill us.” he added.
