A young British investment banker was last night charged with double murder in Hong Kong after two prostitutes were found butchered in his luxury apartment. Cambridge graduate Rurik Jutting, 29, quit his job as a Merrill Lynch trader just days before the grisly discovery of one ‘nearly decapitated’ woman in a suitcase and another who had her throat slashed. He appeared in court this morning for a short hearing in which the two charges of murder were read out to him, and he was remanded in custody until November 10.
Yesterday, police in the former British colony were urgently investigating whether there were any more victims after photos of one of the dead women were allegedly among 2,000 pictures and videos on a smartphone used by Jutting. Sex toys and cocaine were also reportedly found, along with a 12-inch knife that was seized by officers.
In another disturbing development, it emerged Jutting had branded himself an ‘insane psychopath’ in an ‘out-of-office’ e-mail reply at his Bank of America Merrill Lynch account.
Paul Scanlon, a spokesman for Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Hong Kong, said that a person named Rurik Jutting had worked there but left the bank recently. He declined to comment further on the case.
The British Foreign Office confirmed that a British citizen was arrested in Hong Kong on suspicion of murder, but did not release the name, citing regulations.
Autopsies will be performed on the victims to determine the cause of death, authorities said.
Jutting didn't apply for bail on Monday. He will remain in jail until his next court appearance on November 10.
