Paedophile Pop Singer, Gary Glitter Jailed For 16 Years For Sex Attacks On Schoolgirls

70-Year old singer, Gary Glitter was today sentenced to 16 years in prison for assaulting three young girls in a string of attacks while at the height of his fame. The shamed star could spend the rest of his life in jail after he was handed the sentence by a judge at Southwark Crown Court. Judge Alistair McCreath admitted that the 16-year sentence was 'lenient' given the gravity of Glitter's crimes, but said that he was forced to stick to the maximum sentences in force at the time the assaults were carried out in the 1970s and 80s.

A group of fans - some dressed in sparkly oufits attended the sentencing hearing today to show support for Glitter, who was previously jailed for possession of child porn and for abusing two girls in Cambodia.

The singer, who was wearing a black velvet coat and burgundy scarf, showed no emotion as he was led from the dock to start his sentence.

Sentencing the singer, Judge Alistair McCreath said:
'I have read the victim impact statements of all three victims. It is clear, in their different ways, they were all profoundly affected by your abuse of them.
'You did all of them real and lasting damage and you did so for no other reason than to obtain sexual gratification for yourself of a wholly improper kind.'
'The offences for which I must pass sentence today took place many years ago at a time when in particular, in respect of one of them, the maximum sentence was considerably lower than that which is now available.'
