Former Brazil international Fernandao has died in a helicopter crash aged 36. The 36-year-old
was a club legend at Brazilian side Internacional
where he lifted the Copa Libertadores
in 2006.
He scored 42 goals for the club and went on to win the World
Club Cup. The striker also spent three years in France at Marseille and was
capped once for the national side in 2005.
Investigators said Fernandao was one of five people killed
when the helicopter came down in Aruanã, a
province in central Brazil last
night. He was making a routine trip with a business associate according to
local reports.
The tragedy will cast a shadow on Brazil's preparations for
the World Cup, which begins next Thursday. An Internacional statement read: "We
are immensely saddened by the untimely death of our idol.
"What stays with
us are the glorious memories of a striker who honoured the Internacional jersey
with his spirit of leadership and was one of the most important players in the
club's 105-year history."
