Someone over at the Elle UK magazine thought it would be a good idea
for Pharrell Williams to trade in
his signature Vivienne Westwood buffalo
hat for a Native American headdress
on their latest July 2014 cover, and it has caused an uproar among the Native
American community. After Elle released the photos on their site with the
caption, “We persuaded ELLE Style Award
winner Pharrell to trade his Vivienne
Westwood mountie hat for a native
American feather headdress in his best ever shoot,” critics immediately
hopped on social media, expressing their disbelief that Elle would use the
headdress as a fashion statement.
Pharrell has since apologized in a statement that read:
“I respect and honor
every kind of race, background and culture. I am genuinely sorry.”
Maybe Elle UK thought Pharrell could get a pass for wearing
the headdress since he once stated that he was of Egyptian and Native American
heritage in O Magazine recently.
