Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II arrived in Sokoto by air, and immediately proceeded to the palace of the
Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III. The Shehu of Borno, Shehu Abubakar Garbai Ibni Elkanemi, is also visiting Sokoto.
The purpose of the Emir’s maiden visit outside Kano is to pay his respect to the Sultanate, and to formally acquaint with the Sultanate and the present Sultan, who is an elder brother of Sanusi’s.
A source familiar with the tradition explained that Kano is fourth in the Islamic hierarchy of the Northern Nigerian Hausa-Fulani Islamic structure, behind Sokoto, Gwandu, and Bornu. Kano, however, has its own significance as the most populous of the emirates in the north, and indeed in sub-Saharan Africa.
The source, a member of Alhaji Sanusi’s entourage, said that with this development, Sanusi has now launched his presence and authority and will now commence functioning fully within and outside his domain as the Emir of Kano.
