President Jonathan Appoints New Chief Justice Of Nigeria

President Goodluck Jonathan has nominated Mahmud Mohammed as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria. Mr. Mohammed’s nomination was sent by the president to the Senate and was read on Wednesday. According to Premium Times, If confirmed, the Supreme Court judge will replace Aloma Muhtar as Nigeria’s Chief Justice. Mrs. Muhtar will retire November 20 after attaining the mandatory 70 years of age. Read President Jonathan's letter below:

It reads: “In conformity with section 231 sub section (1) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, which gives the President powers to appoint a Chief Justice of Nigeria, acting on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council and subject to confirmation of the appointment by the Senate, I have the honour to forward the nomination of Honourable Justice Mahmud Mohammed, CFR for confirmation as Chief Justice of Nigeria.”

The date for the screening and confirmation of Mahmud Muhammed has not been fixed.
