Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime Served Impeachment Notice

Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime, this Monday morning, has been served a notice of impeachment by the State House of Assembly over allegations of corruption and high-handedness. 14 out of the 24 members of the House of the Assembly approved the process. The Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Eugene Odoh presided over the session where the motion of impeachment was approved.

Governor Chime and the Assembly have been at war over the Assembly’s refusal to approve an N11 billion naira loan for the out going government. Chime was also accused of inducing members of the Assembly to move against the Speaker and the leadership of the House.

The Clerk of the Assembly, Mr. Christopher Chukwurah, who was present at Monday’s session, was directed to serve the notice on the governor immediately. Also, the Deputy Speaker, Chime Oji who was recently elected to represent Enugu North/South Federal Constituency; Hon. Emeka Ogbuabor and Deputy House Leader, John Kevin Ukwuta were suspended at the session having been found guilty of misconduct and violating the rules of Assembly.

However, after the session, a group of lawmakers led by the suspended deputy Speaker sat without the mace and “impeached” the Speaker. The nine lawmakers who arrived the Assembly Complex with another mace, reversed the suspension order earlier approved by the Odo-led leadership and removed Odoh as Speaker of the House.

Hon. Chinedu Nwamba, representing Nsukka East constituency, was “elected” as new Speaker of the House by the group.
