A bomb has exploded at the busy Monday Market in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. Eyewitnesses told SaharaReporters that the bomb went off during a busy morning at the vicinity of the market. The number of casualties could not be immediately verified as security agencies arrive the scene to secure the market.
A Borno government state government official confirmed the blast saying the causality number is very high but stated that security agencies are working to secure the area and rescue victims.
Today's bombing would be the first major bombing by Islamist sect Boko Haram since the beginning of the Ramadan. The "Monday Market" is the biggest open air market in the troubled northeast of Nigeria.
