Four crew members were feared dead as a cargo plane crashed into a commercial building in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, shortly after taking off from the city’s main airport today, Wednesday, July 2. According to the information provided by the Kenyan Airports Authority, KAA, a Fokker 50 Cargo Plane with four people on board has this morning crashed at a commercial building in Utawala after taking off from JKIA.
Besides four crewmen, the plane’s pilot, co-pilot, flight engineer and a loader who were killed in crash, two guards at the building were badly injured. The crash happened around 4 a.m. that meant a worse death toll was avoided.
The plane was carrying khat, the leafy plant production, sale, and consumption are legal in east Africa but banned in many countries across the globe. Khat contains a monoamine alkaloid called cathinone, an amphetamine-like stimulant, which is said to cause excitement, loss of appetite and euphoria.
